A.N. Upadhye

By Prof. A.V. Narasimha Murthy

Dr. Adinatha Neminatha Upadhye was born at Sadalaga village in Belgaum district in 1906. He had his early education in Belgaum, Kolhapur, Sangli and Puna. He studied at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Puna and obtained Masters degree in Prakrit. Subsequently, he joined Rajaram College, Kolhapur, as Professor of Prakrit in which most of the Jaina works have been written.

His mother wanted her son to become a lawyer and earn lot of money. Young Upadhye told his mother "If I become a lawyer, I will be arguing the cases involving murderers, cheaters, thieves and other bad elements. But now I can write about Jina, Thirthankaras, Jaina saints whom you respect most. Hence you should be more happy that I am choosing this career which is nearer to God, than money." His mother was extremely happy at this reply and blessed him.

He dedicated himself to Jaina studies and contributed many books of great rese-arch value. His works include Pravachanasara, Panchasuttam, Varangacharita, Kamsavaho, Lilavati, Kuvalayamala, and numerous others. His contributions were admired by great scholars like Schubring (Germany), Winternitz (Pargue), Keith (Edinburgh), Chatterji (Kolkata), R. Shamashastry (Kautilya fame). Honours came to him from far and wide. He visited Paris, Canberra, Belgium, etc. He was the President of 46th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in 1967.

At the age of 65, he joined the Mysore University as the first Professor of the Department of Jainalogy and Prakrits at the invitation of the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. Javaregowda. The VC had a tough time in convincing the authorities for the appointment of Dr. Upadhye as he was 65. My-sore University came to limelight among many foreign universities due to the presence of Dr. Upadhye as the faculty.

There are many anecdotes revolving around Dr. Upadhye. In a function at Mysore, another great scholar D.L. Narasimhachar, while welcoming Upadhye said, "His full name is Ane Upadhye, meaning an elephant and he is like an elephant in Jainology," and the audience applauded this statement. But while replying Dr. Upadhye said, "If you write my name in English (Roman) it will be AN Upadhye and its short for ANU meaning, just an atom." The audience admired his humility and gave him a sta-nding ovation for this observation.

Dr. Upadhye being a great scholar at international level, was writing letters to scholars all over the world and similarly was receiving letters from them. He used to go to the post box to post these letters. Once when he was in Kolhapur, he felt the post box was too far from his house and caused great inconvenience. He wrote to the postal authorities requesting them to shift the post box near his house. The postal authorities were perplexed at this strange request. As they had heard of his greatness, they reacted positively to his request. They watched for a month, the number of letters that were being posted by Dr. Upadhye and also the letters he received from others. They noticed that 90% of the letters in that post box were posted by Upadhye. Immediately they accepted his request and shifted the post box nearer to his house.

Once Dr. H.M. Nayak, appreciating Upadhye's publications, told the youngsters to emulate the example of Dr. Upadhye, otherwise they will perish. Dr . Upadhye in his replay said, "Be careful in publishing. Many people have published and perished. Don't rush towards publication unless you are very sure of what you publish." This advice applies to present times in a more emphatic way.

I had the good fortune of knowing Dr. Upadhye intimately when he was in Mysore University. When we published a Prakrit inscription mentioning cha a patharo and showed it to him, he hugged me and demanded sweets. When I reminded him that he is a diabetic, he laughed and said "Please don't remind me of my diabetes. I will eat sweets and take one more extra tablet." He repeated the same sentence whenever he came to my house for dinner.

Though Upadhye was provided with a typist by the University, he typed personal letters himself without depending upon the official typist. After retirement from the University in 1975, he went back to Kolhapur and died on Oct. 9, 1975, in his house Dhavala on the 8th road (athavi galli). The Municipal Corporation, after his death, named the road as A.N. Upadhye Marg.

The name of Dr. Upadhye will be immortal as long as Jain studies remain in any part of the world. By accepting to be at Mysore University at the age of 65, he made Mysore University proud.

Dr. G. B. Jain

By Dr. B. M. Hegde

"The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease."- Sir William Osler.

It was four in the afternoon on a pleasant Delhi spring evening, decades ago, when I had to deliver a lecture on some aspect of hypertension - I do not remember the exact title now - where I met a diminutive, fatherly, kind hearted, elderly gentleman with a very broad natural smile, chairing my talk. His very presence and smile made me feel so tranquil that I immediately felt at ease although I was to lecture to the "great" Delhi doctors! Our chemistries gelled so well that we became the greatest of friends till the day Dr. Guninder Bahadur Jain met his maker in Heaven, recently at the age of 80 at his own home, Barnala House, in the comfort of his loving children and their spouses. Thanks to his physician son, Dinesh, death was made dignified for him without the usual tubes stuck in all orifices in the so called ICU which, most of the time, is the most expensive but, useless route to heaven.

I think my lecture went down well with all sections of the audience and the President, in his concluding remarks, used such superlatives about me that I was dumbfounded! I left Delhi and when I reached home I had such a sweet handwritten letter waiting for me, the like of which I never had in my life, which told me what I was. We kept meeting every time I went to Delhi and Late Dr. G.B. Jain sahib came down to my University - Manipal - in December 2000, as Chief Guest for delivering the Convocation address when I was the Vice-Chancellor. He is the other name for true philanthropy. He donated a substantial sum for scholarships in our University on that very occasion. I would like him to have a title, a longish one at that, of a true infracaninophile!

As a physician he was peerless, as a doctor he was the friend, philosopher, and guide to his ailing patients, as a father he was the best that God ever created, as a friend he was genuinely sincere, as a husband, I was told, he was an icon, as a scientist he was curious, as a teacher he was a role model, and as a citizen he was the most committed to his fellow human beings – altruistic to the core. The best part of him was as a literary man. In the year 2001 he penned his memoirs Spring Through Autumn - An Indian Physician's Reminiscences and Reflections published by the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Delhi. After this came his English poetry translation of the Bhagavad-Gita - A Timeless Melody, which stands out like the Geetanjali of Tagore. It was published by the publishing giant Rupa in 2005, and received much acclaim.

He treated me like his own son, and I addressed him as "daddyji". In 2003, he published a collection of my articles, written over the years; spending more than two hundred thousand Indian Rupees from his own pocket and donated them to all medical institutions. I don't remember a parallel to that act of kindness to date. He also wrote a beautiful foreword for that book - Ancient Wisdom, Science and Health.

He literally built a few good hospitals in Delhi nurturing them in every respect. He was the much adored Medical Trustee of the Tirath Ram Shah Charitable Hospital - one of the premier hospitals of Delhi. He walked like a medical colossus over the Delhi medical stage for more than six decades. People of all hues liked and respected him. He had no enemies as he hated none but loved all. Medical students, practitioners, teachers sought his valuable and unparalleled advice, opinion, and guidance on difficult issues and challenges. He excelled in making balanced and practical decisions quickly. His infective sense of humour was as well known as his clinical acumen and skills, and there was never a sad moment in his presence.

After graduating from the Government Medical College, Amritsar, Punjab, he had the best of medical training in Liverpool and Edinburgh in the 1950s under some of the great brains of that time and took his MRCP (Edinburgh) examinations with credit at the young age of 26! But just before that he qualified the DTM & H with the coveted Milne Medal from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. His teachers included Sir Stanley Davidson, Sir John Crofton, Professor K.L. Wig - the first Dean of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College in 1973 and was one of the most respected Fellows even by the local Fellows of the College. He kept in touch with his Scottish and English colleagues to his last days. Luckily his son, Dinesh, also became a Fellow of three Royal Colleges, which gave the old man supreme happiness. Dinesh is the true chip of the old block following on his father's footsteps like his shadow.

Dr. Jain was a homely family man enjoying the company of his children, grandchildren, and in-laws. His only sorrow was his wife's precocious death which he used to repent to his last day. While Dinesh is a physician like his father, Naresh the next son, is a medical administrator, and his only daughter Sunita, a paediatrician of repute in Jaipur. Her husband Kamal is a well-known physician there. Of his six grandchildren, four are already doctors and two are in the medical pipeline! His family garden is full of flowers that blossomed well to serve the society like the gardener himself. May Dr. G.B. Jain's soul rest in eternal peace? May he guide us, all doctors, as to how an authentic doctor could live well even in these days of medical commercialization?

The best memorial for Late Dr. Jain would be for all doctors to live like him. Rudyard Kipling would have written about him thus: "This earth belonged to him - and, More - he was a MAN."

"A few can touch the magic string, and noisy fame is proud to win them: Alas for those that never sing, but die with all their music in them!" -- Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Kiran Shah (Little Kiran)

Kiran Shah :: born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1956.

He lived in Kenya until he was twelve years old when his family decided to move to India. It was in India that Kiran decided to get involved with films, but due to his fathers poor health they decided to leave India and move to England, London where his brother was already settled. Kiran continued his studies in London, but was still interested to get into show business. In 1973 while reading Time Out magazine he spotted an advert auditioning for the Red Buddha Theatre Co., encouraged by his brother he decided to audition. He successfully got the part of the main clown and mime artist, and went on tour with the company in Italy, in the play 'Man From The East'. For the next four years he appeared in various experimental theatre productions.

In 1976 Kiran had his big break into films, his first film was 'Candleshoe' standing-in for a girl called Sara Tamakuni. On location stunt coordinator Bob Anderson, asked Kiran to do stunts for Sara. From then on Kiran's stunt career started and he hasn't looked back since.

On the same film while being at Pinewood Studios Kiran was spotted by a producer John Dark who asked him to audition for a film 'The People That Time Forgot' for a small part. Since appearing in this film playing Bolum, Kiran has appeared in various films, television productions, commercials and videos. These include 'Legend' in which he was co-starring with Tom Cruise, and 'Titanic' where he did stunts for several children. He was also involved on 'The Lord Of The Rings' trilogy with director Peter Jackson. He was scale double and stunt double for all the Hobbits mainly Frodo and trained little people on movement and mask work.

In 2004 Kiran was back in New Zealand filming 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' playing a character called 'Ginarrbrik'.

Kiran also writes poetry, his work has been published in Britain and America. His poems are based on his thoughts and feelings about the places he has been and the experiences he has had. He has written film scripts and currently is working with his nephew on a script. He hopes one day these scripts will be produced.

In 2004 with his nephew Kit formed a company called 'Little Kiran Productions' and in the same year with kit, he co-directed a short film called 'Still living' and in 2005 they have directed their first feature film 'Weekend Lovers'.

Dr. Veerendra Heggade

Born on November 25, 1948, Dr. Veerendra Heggade is the son of Shri Ratnavarma Heggade, former Dharmadhikari, was a boy of great dignity and devotion. Nurtured by the piety of his father's administrative skills and dedication to Dharma, Mr. Heggade showed great maturity at an early age, a maturity that proved itself when the mantle of Heggadeship (Dharmadhikari) fell on his young shoulders at the tender age of 20, on 24th October 1968, while he was preparing for his graduation from Bangalore University.

In less than four decades, since he assumed responsibilities in 1968, he has carried his heritage to greater heights. Not only by continuing to protect the essence of the Kshetra, but also by achieving remarkable progress in his service to mankind.

What distinguishes Shri Veerendra Heggade is that while being the head of a revered religious institution, he is, today, far more than that. His years of practicing 'active' Dharma have given him a vision that combines social issues such as education and environment with religion. This has resulted in him being requested to grace a variety of functions and his opinions treated with immense respect. His advice is sought by the high and mighty on every topic under the sun, bar politics, which he eschews. Amazingly though, Shri Heggade's common touch sees the ordinary supplicant as comfortable in seeking him out as a friend, philosopher and guide. Several religious Mutts have conferred honorific titles such as 'Dharma Rathna', 'Dharma Bhushana', 'Paropakara Dhurandara', 'Abhinava Chamundaraya'

Mr. Heggade's contributions to the religion are immense. He convened a "Dharma Jagrithi Sammelan" at Bangalore in the year 1977, a conference to focus the attention of the people on need to change traditional practices to suit present day social condition. More than 15 Matadhipathis participated for the first time on a common platform. Installed 39 feet high monolithic statue of Bhagwan Bahubali Swamy at Dharmasthala and conducted Maha Masthakabhisheka ceremony in 1982 and 1995. S.D.M. Dharmothana Trust ® was established to renovate archeological and historic important temples of Karnataka. 55 Temples have been renovated till 2004. He also contributes for Communal Harmony through his regular Lectures. Publishes and distributes more than 60,000 copies of moral education High School students. Competitions are held for the students on topics selected on them and prizes awarded to the best students in each school. Mr. Heggade attended WCRP Conference held at Nairobi and Osaka.

Mr. Heggade contributions to the culture are:

Research Interests

My research area is cosmology and gravitational lensing. I am interested in understanding how small fluctuations in the early universe grew to form the large-scale structure observed today. This process is tied to nonlinear gravitational clustering and the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Gravitational lensing, the shearing and magnification of light we receive from distant galaxies, is a powerful probe of these cosmological puzzles.

Lensing can produce multiple images in the strong lensing regime, amplify the light curves of stars due to microlensing, but more typically it leads to small distortions at the level of a few percent in the shapes of distant galaxies. This regime is known as weak lensing: it is used to map the mass distribution of galaxy clusters and the large-scale structure of the universe.

The properties of galaxies and their connection to the ambient dark matter is probed by imaging surveys of galaxies.  These massive surveys are transforming our understanding of the extra-galactic universe. I have worked on theoretical aspects of lensing, on measurements from current surveys and forecasts for surveys planned for the coming decade. The Dark Energy Survey, LSST and SNAP are projects I am involved in.

Lensing and Cosmology at Penn

The people at Penn who work with me are: graduate students Hans Stabenau, Alex Borisov, Michelle Caler and Tsz-Yan Lam (jointly with Ravi Sheth); postdoc Jacek Guzik and research scientist Mike Jarvis. Masahiro Takada who was at Penn until 2005, is now faculty at Tohoku University, Japan, but is still a regular collaborator and visitor here. I also work with my colleagues Gary Bernstein, Ravi Sheth and with the other splendid members of the astronomy group at Penn.

Teaching

Spring 2007:  Physics 533: Topics in Cosmology (Graduate)

Fall 2007:  Physics 503/Astro 525: Introduction to General Relativity and Cosmology (Graduate)

Spring 2008:  Astro 12: Introduction to Astronomy II: Stars, Galaxies and Cosmology (Undergraduate)

With Harrison Prentice-Mott, a junior at Penn, and my colleague Mark Devlin, I have built a table-top experiment that uses custom-built optical lenses to explore gravitational lensing. Now in the lobby of the Physics Department and a must-see on your next visit to Philadelphia.
